LIST AND BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MENU 3 OPTIONS (IF REQUIRED)

OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY

Listing of each upper-level category opening in a job bank or newsletter of media trade groups whose membership includes substantial participation of women and minorities.

DATE CONDUCTED: June/July 2005

STAFF INVOLVED: Tom Godell (General Manager), Alan Lytle (News Director), Stacy Yelton (Program Director)

In June & July of 2005, WUKY created and filled two new positions (see above). These were the only upper level positions that were open during the reporting period. These openings were both listed with several job banks that reach substantial numbers of women and minorities. These job banks include those operated by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Kentucky Broadcasters Association, and (in the cast of the Assistant News Director) JournalismJobs.com. The finalist for the news position (female) learned about the opening from JournalismJobs. Several other female and minority candidates for both positions were referred by these sources.

Establishment of training programs designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify them for higher-level positions.

DATE CONDUCTED: Ongoing

STAFF INVOLVED: Tom Godell (GM) and UK Office of Human Resource Development

WUKY's licensee (University of Kentucky) offers a wide array of free professional development workshops that are open to all staff. These range from "The Basics of Leadership" to "Mediation Skills" to "Time Management". WUKY staff were notified of these opportunities and encouraged to attend as appropriate. New courses are offered each semester, and thus staff members have many opportunities to hone or improve their skills in a variety of areas.

Provision of training to management level personnel as to methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and preventing discrimination.

DATE CONDUCTED: Ongoing

STAFF INVOLVED: Tom Godell (GM) and UK Office of Human Resource Development

The University of Kentucky also makes available to WUKY staff ongoing training courses to help ensure equal opportunity and diversity. Courses taught on a regular basis are "Basics of Diversity", "Gender Styles in Communication", "Gender Styles in Leadership", and "Preventing Sexual Harassment". Some of these training opportunities are also available on-line as well as through traditional classroom training. Management level staff members were notified of these opportunities as they became available during the reporting period and encouraged to participate.
